A Journey into Mindfulness featuring Thich Hhat Hanh
With unprecedented access, WALK WALK WITH ME goes deep inside a Zen Buddhist community who have given up all their possessions and signed upto a life of chastity for one common purpose – to transform their suffering, practice the art of mindfulness with the world-famous teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, and help others to suffer less.
Filmed over three years, in their monastery in rural France and on the road in the USA, this visceral film is a meditation on a community grappling with existential questions and the everyday routine of monastic life.
As the seasons come and go, the monastics’ pursuit for a deeper connection to themselves and the world around them is amplified by insights from Thich Nhat Hanh’s early journals, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese monk Martin Luther King Jr. nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, is one of the most popular Zen Buddhist teachers of all time, and is widely acknowledged for introducing mindfulness to the western world.
Also, a human rights activist, poet and successful author, his books have sold in their millions worldwide, and for the last fifty years his own practice of mindfulness has touched the hearts and minds of people looking for an enhanced mental and emotional resilience and a lifestyle that’s free from anxiety and stress.
Today, mindfulness is in vogue and rapidly becoming more mainstream as armies of business consultants, lifestyle specialists, and self-styled gurus eagerly sell their own brand of mindfulness into schools, corporations, hospitals and government agencies. But whilst the popularisation of mindfulness is a welcome trend, it risks becoming a commodity in the global marketplace where the essence of the original teachings loses its true meaning.
In May 2011, at the height of this mindfulness boom in the west, Thich Nhat Hanh’s monastics invited filmmakers Marc Francis and Max Pugh into their monasteries to witness the depths of their practice and the essence of their mindful living. By exposing their way of life to the cameras for the very first time, they hoped the film could capture their trials and tribulations and their determination to live a mindful life away from commercial gain.
Filming in their main monastery in Plum Village, France, they also travelled on the road with Thich Nhat Hanh and his monastics to Europe and North America; capturing their journey from Vancouver to Mississippi, New York, Washington, San Diego and London.
Through intimate interviews and observational filming, Walk With Me offers a rare insight into monastic life and the deeply personal reasons why Thich Nhat Hanh’s monks and nuns decided to leave their families and follow in his footsteps forever.
Honest and heart warming, Walk With Me touches on the universal themes of belonging, love, loss, hope and death relevant for not just Thich Nhat Hanh’s monks and nuns but for us all.
